If a tree has landed on your roof, don’t panic. Instead, stand your ground and follow these steps.
Phase One
Every second matters when a tree falls on a roof, so you must ensure that everyone evacuates. A roof is not designed to support the weight of a tree. In some scenarios, the pressure of a tree could make a roof cave in.
If you need time to evacuate everyone while a tree is on your roof, use your senses and constantly observe your surroundings. Basically, you will have to race against the clock. In time, your roof structural integrity will weaken, so if you ever hear loud creaking sounds, stop what you’re doing and exit the home.
Phase Two
When everyone is safe outdoors, call the police and the local fire department. Both parties can help you make your next move.
Phase Three
After you’re talked to the police officers and the fire fighters, take a moment to call your insurance company. You’ll need to be calm and focused during this call because you will have to answer many very important questions about your roof.
During this phase, you may have to take pictures of your roof for the insurance company. You may have to fill out some paperwork as well. If your insurance provider is tech-savvy, you could review some of the paperwork digitally on a smartphone.
Phase Four
At the point, it’s time to determine where you will stay during the recovery process. If your home is in poor shape, you’ll need to stay somewhere else like a hotel. Typically, if you have a good insurance policy, you can get help while your home is being repaired. First, the report the damages before you visit a hotel. If you do this, your insurance provider will cover the cost of the suite.
Phase Five
In this phase, you’ll need to contact a reputable roofing company to schedule a roof inspection. The roofer will let you know if your roof needs to be replaced or repaired. Afterwards, you can begin the road to recovery.
