Most people don’t think about their building’s roof unless there’s something wrong with it. Fortunately, you can avoid costly roof replacement and restoration by making sure that your roof is installed properly using Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF).
SPF has been used in roofing since the 1970s, when Texas A&M’s Physical Plant Department went looking for alternatives to the traditional tar-and-gravel built-up roofing systems. Since then, SPF roofing has proven to be incredibly sustainable and highly energy efficient.
In addition to that, SPF roofing offers excellent waterproofing capabilities and insulation values.
SPF Roofing is Waterproof
With most roofing systems, there is always a risk of leakage. This is because traditional roofing systems have seams and potential areas of penetration.
However, with SPF roofing, you do have that problem.
An SPF roofing system is comprised of a plastic that began as two liquid chemical compounds – isocyanate and polyol.
These two liquid chemical compounds are sprayed and become solid very quickly, expanding to cover your entire existing roof, deck, and substrate.
Since it is liquid when it is applied, it fills all the gaps, cracks, and holes to create a fully seamless roofing system.
With no joints or seams, there is no way for air or water to pass through and get inside your building structure.
Additionally, no fasteners are required since SPF roofing is also self-adhering, which means that there will be no areas of penetration.
Since SPF is spray-applied, contractors can form slopes and shapes, leveling out your roof and guiding water to run into proper drainage areas, eliminating any chances of ponding water.
SPR Roofing Insulates Well
SPF roofs have an R-value of 6.2 to 6.5 per inch.
The R-value of a material is the estimate of how well the material can resist the flow of heat; the higher a material’s R-value, the better it is at resisting heat.
At 6.5 per inch, SPF has a higher R-value than other insulation materials such as fiberglass and cellulose, which have R-values of 3.5 and 3.7 per inch, respectively. It provides more thermal resistance with less material than any other kind of roof insulation.
SPF keeps the heat of the sun out of your building in the summer and keeps your warmth in during the winter. This can greatly help your heating and cooling system, as well as increase your energy efficiency.
In the end, when you get an SPF roofing system, you’re not only getting cost-effective roofing – you’re also getting a superb waterproofing and insulation system.
